On hot days, we secretly sneak off to where the water refreshes us and the sun can't beat the coolness: into our beautiful gorges and ravines.
There are numerous activities in Tyrol that you can enjoy despite the high summer temperatures: A hike in the cool gorges of the region, a visit to the museum (thanks to the air conditioning!), or an evening trip to the open-air cinema will cool you down and make for pleasant summer days.
Exercise on a hot summer's day is not everyone's cup of tea. In Tyrol, however, there are numerous hiking trails and routes in the cool water for this endeavour. In the Kaiserklamm gorge in the Tyrolean lowlands, for example, you can escape the summer heat with a walk between the rock faces and even jump into the cold water at suitable points. Incidentally, Emperor Franz Joseph and his Sissi were already aware of the benefits of natural air conditioning around the Brandenberger Ache.
The Wolfsklamm gorge near Stans is a tip with a pious destination - through the gorge you can reach the St. Georgenberg monastery, which is considered the oldest place of pilgrimage in Tyrol, via a bridge that is more than 500 years old. If you prefer a more leisurely approach, you can also simply make yourself comfortable on the beach of one of the many bathing lakes in Tyrol: Lake Achensee is a favourite spot for water sports enthusiasts, while Lake Lanser See near Innsbruck offers a more leisurely approach with a visit to the beautifully situated lakeside restaurant.
The cultural programme in Tyrol has no summer break - but it is usually moved outside or into the night-time hours. A regular summer classic in Innsbruck is the open-air cinema in the Zeughaus. Special films are shown in the inner courtyard of the former armoury of Emperor Maximilian. During the day in August, you can cool off in one of the Tyrolean state museums.
If you don't like hiking alone and don't mind a spectacle on the mountain, the Karwendelmarsch is the right place for you. In the competition, in which you have to cover 52 or 35 kilometres as quickly as possible, depending on how much you enjoy hiking, you are not only invited to compete, but also to enjoy the rugged beauty of the Karwendel Nature Park. If you just wanted to watch anyway, you can go on your own hike to the hotspots of the competition.
