It is the welcome for sun worshippers: the icebreaker March slowly brings temperatures back up and offers a foretaste of spring. At the same time, there is hardly a better month for winter sports enthusiasts.

Active in March

One plant forces its way through the snow in March to show the world its beautiful blossom. The snow rose or Christmas rose grows at an altitude of up to 1900 metres - which is why many hikers make their way through the forests and to the Tyrolean mountain huts that are already or still open at this time of year. In Kufstein, there is even a guided snow rose hike to the Brentenjoch. The hike, which leads via the Duxeralm and the Brentenjochalm, is partly lined with entire slopes full of blooming snow lilies. The Halltal valley, which is part of the Karwendel Nature Park, also blooms in spring.

Cultural events in March

Winding alleyways with old shops, bookshops and cosy cafés - this is what the old town of Hall, which is even larger than that of the provincial capital Innsbruck, has to offer. Sloping gently down a hill around a magnificent church, it is reminiscent of a small town in Tuscany, especially when the first warm rays of sunshine appear after a long winter. However, the salt town has more to offer than just walks along the cobblestones: because you can't always rely on the weather when spring is still in its infancy, we recommend a visit to the Hall Mint in Hasegg Castle, where the forerunner of the dollar was once minted. A replica of the world's first roller minting machine is one of the highlights of the mint museum. Right in the centre of Hall is the Mining Museum, which documents the town's time as an important salt mining town. After sightseeing, with a bit of weather luck, you can sunbathe with a cup of coffee on the upper town square.
