Strawberry fields in Tyrol

The Tyrolean strawberry fields are spread across the Inn Valley between Stams and Radfeld. There is also a particularly high density of strawberry fields in Dölsach in East Tyrol, where you can pick your own strawberries in a total of 4 fields.

The strawberry growers provide information about the rules for self-pickers directly at the stand, for example, there may be a minimum purchase quantity. However, you should always adhere to the following rules:

• Only walk between the berries and never climb on the plants.
• Handle the plants with care.
• Do not overdo it when snacking.
• What is not picked for the basket must also be eaten

Picking your own strawberries has many advantages: it's hardly more regional, you can choose exactly the fruit you like best and snacking in the field also has its attractions (but please don't overdo it). You also save a lot of money and can stock up with a clear conscience until the next picking season.

The picking season usually begins in mid-May and lasts until the end of July, although some fields open earlier or stay open longer.

The price of a kilo of home-picked strawberries varies from year to year and depends very much on the weather conditions during the flowering period, i.e. how high the strawberry farmers estimate the harvest yield to be. In 2024, prices for a kilo of strawberries ranged between 4 and 5.80 euros.

There are numerous ways to preserve picked strawberries: from strawberry jam and strawberry syrup to strawberry liqueur, many classic preservation methods are known. However, if you have enough space in the freezer, you should definitely try pureeing the fruit and then freezing it: this way you always have fresh strawberries to hand for smoothies and yoghurt or as a side dish to Kaiserschmarrn and semolina jam. When frozen in ice cube bags, the strawberry cubes are ideal for strawberry dumplings. Freezing them also has the advantage that you can still make jam from the puree, but then serve it as freshly cooked.
