Customs and traditions in Tirol

Due to the remoteness of many valleys, countless traditions and linguistic dialects have developed in Tirol over the centuries. Many of them are still kept alive today with great dedication.

With magnificent masks and costumes, carnival is celebrated more exuberantly in Tirol than almost anywhere else. The midsummer bonfires, a medieval custom, light up summit rocks and mountain slopes with the most beautiful flames. The more than 40 cattle drives at the end of the summer are a colourful spectacle, when magnificently decorated cattle, sheep and goats return to the valleys. And at Christmas time, the Tiroleans bring the year to a contemplative close at the magical Advent markets.
