Zillertal Alps High Mountain Nature Park

Covering an area of 422 square kilometres, the high mountain nature park alternates between trough valleys carved out by glaciers and dense forests. In between, there are numerous traces of Alpine culture: mountain huts, mountain pastures and high-altitude trails.

Between deep gorges, unspoilt mountain forests and the peaks and glaciers of the Zillertal main ridge, a traditional cultural landscape opens up with extensive alpine meadows and cultivated pastures. The high mountain nature park extends in the rear Zillertal from the mountaineering village of Ginzling to the highest peak, i.e. across all alpine altitude levels from around 1,000 to 3,500 metres above sea level. It surrounds five side valleys, also known as "Gründe", and famous mountains such as Löffler, Schwarzenstein, Möseler and Hochfeiler. Its exceptionally high biodiversity of plants and animals can be explored with experienced guides: Between May and October, nature park hikes are offered on around 30 different themes.

1. high-altitude trail in a class of its own

The difficult Berliner Höhenweg is one of the most spectacular long-distance hiking trails in Tyrol and leads from Finkenberg and the Gamshütte through the heart of the Zillertal Alps High Mountain Nature Park: hikers can expect marvellous views of the glaciated high mountain world as well as wonderful insights into the natural beauty of this high alpine landscape.

2. mountaineering village Ginzling

Where the pioneers of mountaineering met 150 years ago for their first ascents, mountain enthusiasts still meet today. After the impressive journey through the Zemmschlucht gorge or the single-track tunnel, you reach the traditional Tyrolean village, which is an ideal starting point for most of the 72 three-thousand metre peaks in the Zillertal Alps and for many via ferratas.

5. tour to the Petersköpfl

Even the camera eye is amazed: a wondrous guard of countless cairns of different sizes has marched up to the Petersköpfl. You can take your time adjusting the aperture, because they don't move. Only occasionally does a stone slip out of place.
