Naturpark Kaunergrat

The Kaunergrat Nature Park covers an area of almost 600 square kilometres from the Upper Inn Valley to the Ötztal Alps and includes the Pitztal Valley, the Kaunertal Valley and the municipality of Fliess.

Have you seen a herd of ibex today? This is not uncommon in the Kaunergrat Nature Park if you are out and about at the right time. The park is home to 1,200 of these impressive, agile horned animals. But there is much more to discover on excursions through the nature park: for example, 1,100 butterfly species, 84 three-thousand metre peaks and 47 mountain pastures. From the Upper Inn Valley up to the Ötztal Alps, rare and spectacular natural and cultural landscapes unfold in the Kaunergrat Nature Park over an area of 590 square kilometres, which can be explored on many themed trails and guided hikes. As the nature park encompasses all altitude levels of the Alps, the natural spectacles are diverse and the experiences extremely varied.

The upland moor in the Pillertal, a small side valley of the Pitztal, in the centre of the Kaunergrat Nature Park, has fascinated visitors for thousands of years with its extraordinary flora and fauna. The family-friendly hike along the largely barrier-free Piller Moor nature trail leads through exciting moorland to the peat cutting, where valuable peat was mined until the 1970s.
