Downhill: The filming locations

The film Downhill with Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Will Ferrell was shot in winter 2018 in Ischgl, Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis and the Kaunertal in Tyrol in Austria. We have researched the exact locations for you.

The interior shots

The hotel

The Schlosshotel Ischgl is actually called the Schlosshotel Fiss and is a 5-star hotel in Ischgl's neighbouring region. It is located directly on the slopes of the family-friendly Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis ski area with 162 kilometres of slopes.

All interior shots were filmed in the Schlosshotel Fiss, such as the room shots, the dinner with friends, the scenes in the corridor, at the bar and the seating areas in the entrance area.

Some of the crew even lived here during the three-month shoot. We're not allowed to say who exactly, just this much: they liked it so much that they booked a holiday for the whole family.

The lift

For the scenes in the lift, the production team was looking for a very special lift and finally found it in the Hotel Gramaser in Ischgl.

The tunnel in the village

The Ischgl village tunnel is also known as "Ischgl's Hall of Fame": a gallery with all the stars who have performed at the famous Top of the Mountains concerts on the Idalp adorns the walls of the 130-metre-long tunnel, which conveniently takes guests by escalator from the pedestrian zone in the centre directly to the valley station of the Fimba cable car.

The ski hire

It's smart to hire skis for your skiing holiday so that you always have well-maintained and new equipment at your disposal. The Stanton family hired their equipment from Sport Zangerl, which is located directly in Ischgl's pedestrian zone and not far from the valley station. As well as hire equipment, they also have the latest styles for the piste.

The piste manager's office

The scene in which the family complains about the avalanche blast was filmed in the real mountain railway office directly on the Idalp, where the helibase of Dr Schenk, who is considered a luminary in the field of trauma surgery, is also located. There is no better and faster care. By the way: planned avalanche blasting only takes place outside of ski operations in order to guarantee the safety of winter sports enthusiasts.

The exterior shots

The access road to Ischgl is also winding, but the producers chose the spectacular Kaunertal Glacier Road for the film and put up a special sign for Ischgl in the "Schnapsloch" section.

The village centre

All exterior shots in the village were filmed in Iscgl's pedestrian zone. There are not only gourmet temples, delicatessens and sports shops, but also some of the après-ski bars mentioned below. It is precisely this mix of different establishments that makes the atmosphere in the village so extraordinary.

The Alpine Coaster

The scene with the Alpine Coaster was taken in Fiss - more precisely at the Schneisenfeger in Fiss, which provides fast off-piste descents in both summer and winter. The fun photo station along the route makes for an individual holiday memory that you can laugh about at home for a long time to come.

The restaurants and huts

The Wonnealm

The key scene in the film, in which the avalanche rushes towards the Stanton family, takes place on the Wonnealm in Fiss. The view there is sensational, even though the mountain on which the avalanche occurs has been retouched into the picture. The Wonnealm is located directly on the "Schönjochabfahrt" piste in the Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis ski area and serves delicious game specialities from the local hunting grounds.

The Alpenhaus

The Alpenhaus is located directly on the Idalp and is widely known for its top cuisine. Head chef Manuel Überlackner cooks to award-winning standards and counts international celebrities among his guests.

The Seealm Hög

Right next to the "Schneisenfeger" Alpine Coaster, the Seealm Hög is a cosy place to stop for a bite to eat. It is located directly on the piste and is also worth a visit in summer because of the neighbouring play park. Incidentally, the kitchen not only offers excellent Tyrolean delicacies, but also specialises in vegetarian and vegan dishes. Incidentally, the mascots you can see in the background of the film are Murmli and Berta from the Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis family region.

The après ski pub

If you fancy a party and après-ski after a long day of skiing, Ischgl is the place for you. Schatzi Bar, Kuhstall, Trofana Alm and Champagnerlounge are just a few of the 26 après ski hot spots in Ischgl. By the way, Pete celebrates a bit in all of them.

The piste and ski shots

Almost all of the ski shots were filmed in the Ischgl ski area of the Silvretta Arena, with piste 6A being the most photographed. The ski resort boasts 239 kilometres of pistes and offers something for every ability level and every taste. So it's no wonder that the production team opted for Ischgl, which offers not only guaranteed snow but also perfect infrastructure, numerous refreshment stops and professionals in every area.

The gondola

A special gondola (no. 64s) on the Silvrettabahn (A1) was reserved for the crew for filming, in which the team was able to shoot the whole day from different perspectives. Incidentally, the gondola is specially marked, so if you fancy following in Dreyfus' and Ferrell's footsteps, all you have to do is turn up at the valley station and wait for the branded gondola.

The chairlift

The chairlift shots were taken on the Nachtweidebahn, from where you can also see the famous Idalp.

The Nachtweide cable car also takes you to all the slopes on which the ski scenes were filmed.
