Attraction TYROL ALPINE IBEX CENTRE “AM SCHROFEN”

Open today
St. Leonhard im Pitztal

They leap gracefully from rock to rock at dizzying heights: ibexes are truly fascinating animals - and play an important role in the Pitztal valley. At the ibex center in St. Leonhard, guests can get very close to the wild animals.

We recommend because

Ibexes have a long history in the Pitztal - with sad and happy periods. At the Ibex Center am Schrofen in St. Leonhard, guests can learn about the Pitztal heraldic animal and its habitat. The center includes the architecturally exciting "Haus am Schrofen" near the "Schrofenhof" - one of the oldest farms in the valley. An interactive exhibition uses historical photos and objects to show how ibexes were first wiped out and then reintroduced to the Pitztal more than 60 years ago. If you cross a bridge into the open shortly afterwards, you will understand the fascination for the animal. Ibex and their fawns leap light-footedly over the stones in a spacious enclosure. Visitors can get quite close to them, but without disturbing them. If you like, you can also hike to the "Haus am Schrofen". The family-friendly tour starts at the municipal office in St. Leonhard.

Description

Tales about the Alpine ibex in the Alpine region are closely connected with the parish of St. Leonhard. Today, 65 years after the successful re-introduction of the Alpine ibex to Pitztal valley, the visitor centre “Am Schrofen” is devoted to telling this fascinating story. The accessible centre impresses with its exceptional architecture and includes an interactive exhibition on two levels, a café-restaurant with a visitor terrace as well as an info area and shop. You can observe marmots and Alpine ibexes on eye level in a walk-in game enclosure (the feeding station is accessible for wheelchair users). The marmots are in hibernation.

Important: Please note that dogs must be kept on their lead in the entire area. Dogs are NOT allowed inside the Alpine ibex enclosure.
