Description

In 2003, the Albrecht family built the "Vitalberg" in Pertisau, a museum experience dedicated to Tiroler Steinöl (shale oil), which is unique to the region. Reflecting the logo of the Tiroler Steinölwerke and designed to resemble a historic mine, the museum stands 14 metres high and 35 metres long. The mine gallery, named "Martin Stollen" after the company's founder, welcomes visitors with the traditional greeting "Glück Auf" (Good Luck). The floor is covered in slate, the parent rock of oil shale, and special lighting adds a touch of intrigue to the museum’s atmosphere, creating a truly unforgettable experience. Walk-in glass display cabinets and pictures along the gallery tell the story of shale oil and the Albrecht family, who have mined and produced the oil for four generations. Historical artefacts, including a stone mallet from 3000 BC, document the evolution of shale oil extraction. The “Vitalberg” shows both traditional and modern methods of processing shale oil. A multimedia film presentation allows visitors to immerse themselves in the world of the shale oil miners, and there is a kid-friendly tour for young visitors. The futuristic glass structure above the mine houses a café with stunning views of Lake Achensee and the Rofan and Karwendel mountains.

All parts of the Tiroler Steinöl Vitalberg are barrier-free and accessible with a wheelchair or stroller.
