WALCHENSTEIN CASTLE RUIN
For many years, the Walchenstein castle ruin in the municipality of Iselsberg-Stronach was hidden by trees and bushes. Since a storm in autumn 2018 that swept away many trees, it has become visible again.
The castle complex was built in 1274 by the Counts of Gorizia as part of the fortification ring around Schloss Bruck (Lienz). In the turmoil of wars in the 13th and 15th centuries, Walchenstein Castle served the purpose of blocking the Iselsberg Pass.
The name Walchenstein probably derives from a Friulian vassal and his descendants who inhabited the castle on behalf of the Counts of Gorizia. In popular parlance, our southern neighbors, the Romans (so today’s Italians), are referred to as Walsche or Welsche.
Like many other castles in East Tyrol, Walchenstein Castle lost its military significance and was sold to various owners over the centuries.
The existing walls, secured in 1997/1998, are part of the former wall ring around the castle and are accessible to the public.
