Parish church "St. Andrä"

Description

PARISH CHURCH OF ST. ANDRÄ

Due to archaeological excavations, we now know that there was already a sacred building at this site as early as the 5th century – this is evidenced by the priest's bench with remains from Roman times that have been uncovered. The church of St. Andrä was first documented in the 10th century.
The construction was supported by the Patriarch of Aquileia, and there were three further expansions in the following centuries.

Frescos: The Expulsion from Paradise

Inside, we find elements from various eras. The oldest wall paintings date back to 1300 and depict the Expulsion from Paradise. There are also frescoes from the 13th to 14th century. The most recent representations from 1761 show Saint Andrew as the advocate of the town of Lienz and as the crossbearer.

Noteworthy is also the organ from the year 1618, built by the master Andreas Butz from Passau. 50% of the pipe inventory still originates from the time of its establishment.

Historically significant are the gravestones of the last Count of Gorizia, Leonhard of Gorizia, as well as those of Michael of Wolkenstein and his wife Barbara of Thun.

The only frescoes by the painter Albin Egger-Lienz
The Warrior Memorial Chapel in the outer area of the parish church is not only a memorial for the fallen but – at his explicit request – the final resting place of Albin Egger-Lienz. The frescoes inside the Warrior Memorial Chapel were the only ones he ever painted.

Visiting Hours: Daily from 07:00 to 20:00
The keys for the Warrior Memorial Chapel can be collected from the church inn
