The natural phenomenon of Lottensee where a mountain lake forms out of nothing amidst green meadows, larch and birch forests. The perfect place to enjoy and soak up the sun.
The Wildmoos plateau (1,320 m) is a popular local recreational area near Seefeld with a very interesting natural phenomenon close to the picturesque lake, the Möserer See: 2 mountain lakes - Wildmoossee and Lottensee – appear from seemingly nowhere in the middle of the green meadows, larch and birch trees.
This aperiodic (irregular) natural highlight is most likely a complicated mix of the levels of spring rain and snow melt in the underground karst system. When the spring thaw begins, the underground system fills with water and any excess water flows into the land depressions creating little lakes. These can disappear again after just a few weeks, but sometimes the water level continues to rise from the underground springs even after the thaw – a fascinating natural spectacle.
There have been many attempts to try to predict the appearance of the lakes, all of them unsuccessful, and so the exact cause of their appearance or non-appearance remains a mystery.
The Lottenseehütte overlooks this aperiodic phenomenon and is a nice place to stop off in both summer and winter. The rustic interior, the large sun terrace with a view of the lake, and the welcoming atmosphere make for a most enjoyable visit. The scenic circular walk is a favourite among nature lovers or there is an e-bike tour around the Wildmoos plateau for the more energetic. The Lottenseehütte is also accessible by car and parking is available.
