In the 13th and 14th centuries the castle served as a permanent residence for the noble family of the Lords of Ried. The lords of Ried had a basilisk (mythical creature) in their coat of arms. The stele directly in the herb garden of Sigmundsried Castle tells about historical and historic events of Ried in the Upper Inn Valley and the "Oberer Gricht".
