Grünbichlkapelle

Description

In April/May of the last year of the war in 1945, numerous Wehrmacht units entrenched themselves in the Sölland area for a "last stand" against the advancing Allies. One such SS troop took refuge in the forest above the Grünbichlhof and covered the Americans approaching from Itter with machine gun salvos. In the course of this pointless skirmish, the Grünbichlhof was set on fire and the farmer's son, Josef Ortner, who was fleeing from the farm, was fatally shot. He had happily returned home from the front a few weeks earlier and was so tragically killed. He is commemorated at the site of the fatal bleeding to death with a depiction of the fire and a commemorative picture.
