Arzl im Pitztal

Church of the Holy Thomas in Arzl-Wald

Description

A chapel dedicated to St. Thomas the Apostle is mentioned in a deed of donation as early as 1400 and later in 1493.

It was destroyed by fire in 1754 and rebuilt on a larger scale. The church fell victim to fire again in 1909. The new building erected in 1911/12 would almost have been destroyed again in 1927 in the major fire in Wald if Wendelin Gaim from Wenns had not saved it almost single-handedly.

The neo-Gothic church, surrounded by an atmospheric cemetery, contains frescoes by the busy painter and restorer RAFAEL THALER from Innsbruck, who painted in a neo-late Baroque style with Nazarene echoes (Gandenstuhl, four church fathers, Theresia, Antonius) The original patronage of the church is commemorated by the group of St. Thomas the Unbeliever with Christ on the high altar, carved by sculptor Nikolaus Krabacher. The two side figures of St. Joseph and St. John the Baptist are by Josef Grissemann from Imst. The reliefs of the many evangelists and St. George fighting the devil on the pulpit cheeks were created by Andreas Hinterholzer. St. Margaret from around 1770 has been preserved from the former rococo furnishings.
