Burgschrofen Kapelle

Description

In the south of the municipality of Schwendau, a mighty rock of limestone and dolomite rises in the middle of the valley floor, on which stands the Burgschrofenkapelle chapel, visible from afar. Due to the events surrounding the expulsion of the Zillertal Protestants in 1837, the chapel at the Burgstallschrofen was also built in Schwendau as a visible sign and quasi as a “memorial” for the Catholic faith. An old scripture says: “The sensible and quiet pastor of Hippach, Josef Kirchner, with the help of the neighboring clergy, succeeded in creating a rather graceful little church in round shape with charitable contributions and a large number of robots from the congregation, which beautifies the whole area from afar and attracts the eyes of the hikers. ” The Neo-Baroque pilgrimage church “To our crucified Saviour” can be reached today via a short path lined with brick Stations of the Cross. The foundation stone was laid on 12 May 1844.

The question of whether a castle once stood here was investigated in more detail by test excavations in the summer of 2015. Remnants of walls from five periods of construction were uncovered. Stefan Wechselberger from Schwendau dealt extensively with the subject and published the book "Das Geheimnis vom Burgstallschrofen", which is available from the Mayrhofen-Hippach Tourist Board.

The Burgstallschrofen was and is a special place for believers and peace seekers and a true place of strength with many different herbs, flowers, shrubs and grasses.
