Archduke Ferdinand II was a passionate collector and art lover. Over 450 years ago, this passion gave rise to the world's first museum at Ambras Castle.
Ambras Castle Innsbruck is one of the most beautiful and important sights in Austria and one of the top excursion destinations in Tyrol.
A unique love story: the castle was a love gift from Archduke Ferdinand II (1529-1595) to the "Beautiful Welserin" Philippine. However, the Augsburg merchant's daughter was not befitting the Habsburg emperor's son: the wedding, marriage and children had to be officially kept secret.
Chambers full of treasures: Ferdinand II housed his collections in a specially built museum building. Everyone wanted to marvel at his treasures of crystal, silver, gold, glass and rare natural objects as well as armour, weapons, paintings and exotic treasures: the first museum in the world - a true must-see!
In addition to the famous Kunst- und Wunderkammer (Chamber of Art and Curiosities), you can also visit the armoury, the Spanish Hall, the original bath of Philippine Welser, the Strasser glass collection, the Habsburg Portrait Gallery (open in the summer months) and impressive special exhibitions.
Ambras Castle Innsbruck - More than history!
