A visit to Ambras Castle, which sits proudly above Innsbruck on the southern outskirts of the city, will give you a real Renaissance feeling. The magnificent building, the many art-historical treasures and curiosities as well as the idyllic castle garden make a tour a princely experience - for adults as well as for young knights.
Ambras Castle is one of the most important sights in Innsbruck. Its cultural and historical significance is inextricably linked to the personality of Archduke Ferdinand II (1529-1595), a true Renaissance prince who promoted the arts and sciences. He founded the magnificent Ambras collections, for which he had a museum complex designed according to the most modern criteria built in the Lower Castle.
Today's exhibition attempts to reconstruct the Archduke's Chamber of Art and Curiosities, his Heroes' Armory and Armoury as well as his Antiquarium. In Ferdinand's time, the living quarters were located in the high castle.
Today, the Habsburg Portrait Gallery is spread over three floors with portraits from Albrecht III (1349-1395) to Emperor Franz I (1768-1835). More than 200 portraits are on display, including valuable works by famous artists such as Lukas Cranach, Anton Mor, Titian, van Dyck and Diego Velásquez.
The ground floor of the high castle houses the collection of late medieval sculptures, the showpiece of which is Emperor Maximilian I's St. George's Altar. You can also admire one of the most extensive glass collections in the world. The Strasser Glass Collection contains precious Renaissance and Baroque creations from Venice, Bohemia, Silesia and Tyrol.
