Any family-run company which has been in business for 235 years must be doing something right. That is exactly the case at Walde Seifen & Kerzen, a traditional soap and candle shop based in Innsbruck.
It was back in 1780 that Peter Walde I moved from Upper Lusatia, a historical region covering parts of Germany and Poland, to Innsbruck. Upon his arrival, he purchased a building in the Innstraße (and together with it citizenship) from where he set about providing the local population with fine soaps. Walde Seifen & Kerzen is today still based in the same sweet-smelling location and is today run by another Peter Walde.
The scent of herbs and tradition
As well as soaps, Walde also produces beautiful candles. The company's shop is just a stone's throw from Innsbruck cathedral and bears the name "Walde Kerzenzieherei & Lebzelterei", reflecting the fact that in early modern times the "Lebzelter" (craftsmen whose main business was producing honey) also had the right to turn beeswax into candles.
Last but not least, Walde Seifen & Kerzen also sells a selection of cleaning products – maybe not the best present for the one you love, but certainly very practical nonetheless!
