Deeply rooted in tradition, the grand cattle drives in Hopfgarten, Itter and Kelchsau are wonderful festivals celebrated each year in fall with local music, Tirolean delicacies and finest, homemade schnapps.
The cattle drive in Hopfgarten and Kelchsau is among the biggest of the area and actually begins the day before with a genuine Tirolean Evening and lively music, including the inimitable thigh slapping and lederhosen-wearing “Schuhplattler” dancers. The Tirolean Evening takes place on Friday, September 27, 2024, at the Salvena Event Center by 8:30pm.
The grand cattle drive and associated festival takes place on Saturday, September 28, 2024. The small village of Kelchsau and its original village center provides the perfect backdrop for the farmer’s market and cattle drive. Traditional crafts and Tirolean delicacies turn this day into a truly remarkable event. Most of the cattle has to be herded even further down the valley to their home farms in Hopfgarten and Itter. Hundreds of cows are therefore herded through Hopfgarten Market, where they are welcomed to cheers and whoops. Locally sourced produce and mouth-watering Tirolean specialties are available from the farmer’s market as of 09:00am. Craftsmen that strive to maintain their traditional working practices stand by ready to share a few tricks of the trade with visitors.
