When it comes to sport and leisure activities, Achensee is one of the number one addresses in Tirol – not only alphabetically! Covering 6.8 square kilometres and up to 133 metres deep, it is the region’s largest lake.
Located between the Karwendel Mountains and the Brandenberg Alps, Lake Achensee is a popular destination for surfers, windsurfers and sailors and is playfully known by locals as the “Sea of Tirol”. There are swimming areas along the shore from the north (Achenkirch) to Perstisau, Schwarzenau, Achenseehof and Seespitz in the south.
As with all mountain lakes, the water remains relatively cold all year round, reaching between 20 and 22°C in summer, though those brave souls taking part in the annual New Year’s Day swim must endure temperatures a lot lower than that! The lake is known for its excellent water quality, a factor which attracts many scuba divers. Underwater visibility can reach up to 10 metres. Visitors who prefer staying above the surface can either hire a pedalo or an electric boat or board one of the large sightseeing vessels which criss-cross the lake.
One of the main attractions visible from the shoreline is the Sport & Vitalpark Achensee, an outdoor nature and adventure park combining lush green meadows, cosy mountain huts and 500 kilometres of signposted hiking trails. Cable cars transport visitors from Maurach and Pertisau up into the Rofan Mountains and the Karwendel Massif. Walkers and hikers will find a number of trails close to the shoreline leading around Tirol’s largest lake.
